The Chisos Mountains rising over the Chihuahuan Desert in Big Bend

Big Bend

Chisos Basin, Big Bend

A mountain range inside a desert inside a national park the size of Rhode Island, with the darkest measured night sky in the lower 48.

Big Bend punishes casual planning. It is a five-hour drive from the nearest interstate city, the gas stations close early, and cell service is a courtesy, not a service.

That inconvenience is the point. Come in winter, stay three nights, and give one of them entirely to the sky.

Don't miss

  • The Window Trail at sunset
  • Santa Elena Canyon at 1,500 feet of limestone
  • Certified International Dark Sky Park
  • Hot springs on the Rio Grande
